Development

The target in the development of pistons is, that the piston will be adapted in optimal condition to the other engine-components.

The relations and effects between piston and engine are various. This means, that the reason and effects of a certain behavior can often be assigned only on indirect ways and they can mostly not forecasted in advance.

By that we have the importance of ongoing continuous practical tests during the development of the piston. Following aspects have to be considered:

Achieving characteristics like stability, deformation, thermal expansion etc.
  • performance, wear characteristics, noise, durability etc.
  • Lubrification, surface speed, pressure force etc.
  • Influences on the engine and its characteristics:
        - compression ratio
        - power
        - fuel consumption
        - temperature of cooling fluid
        - temperature of oil
        - temperature of exhausts
        - engine vibrations
        - smoothness of idle

The priority in the development of a piston is focused on following points:
  • durability
  • characteristics during hot temperature
  • abrasion
  • noise
In addition we have to focus the development on
  • the optimal material
  • the construction of the piston
  • the production
  • the quality control
